Language Influenced by Culture: Acceptability of Philippine English Among English Language Major Students

Abstract

This study investigates the acceptability of Philippine English (PhE) within the academic context among Filipino English as a Second Language (ESL) students. Employing qualitative research methods such as thematic analysis and content analysis, the research explores Filipino ESL students' perceptions of PhE and proposes a PhE-oriented Pedagogical Framework. The study reveals multifaceted understandings of PhE, encapsulated in themes like Varieties and Variations, Informality and Stereotype, Borrowing and Creation of Words, and Different Characteristics. Additionally, it identifies key factors influencing the acceptability of PhE, including Language Emphasis, Colloquial Spelling and Abbreviations, Introduction and Explanation Markers, and Grammatical Errors and Confusion. The conclusions drawn highlight the complex relationship between Filipino ESL students and their native English variety, emphasizing the necessity for nuanced pedagogical approaches.
