Abstract

Gender equality is a central element of sustainable development, reflected in SDG 5, which emphasizes the elimination of discrimination and the empowerment of women and girls. Despite progress in recent decades, persistent socio-cultural barriers and economic inequalities continue to hinder global and national advancement. This study aimed to evaluate the role of gender equality in achieving SDG 5 by examining the links between human development, gender indicators, and economic performance, while also identifying the barriers that slow progress and potential mechanisms for overcoming them. An interdisciplinary methodology was applied, combining structural analysis of gender stratification, content analysis of legal and policy documents, the theoretical framework of social construction of gender, and econometric modeling. The quantitative analysis employed multiple linear regression using data on the Human Development Index (HDI), Gender Development Index (GDI), and Gender Inequality Index (GII) for 20 countries. The findings indicate that improvements in HDI are the strongest predictor of reductions in GII, whereas GDI plays a comparatively weaker role. Higher levels of socio-economic development are consistently associated with stronger gender equality outcomes, underlining the interdependence between gender progress and overall human development. Future research should broaden the dataset to include employment, education, and political participation indicators, and investigate time trends to capture the dynamic relationship between gender equality and sustainable development.
